Come out and see your favorite electrician perform with the Gainesville Community Band on April 12! I will be performing at Santa Fe College Fine Arts Hall at 3 p.m. as a trumpeter for the official community band of Gainesville.
I have been a part of the Gainesville Community Band for three years now, but I was no stranger to music before then. I’ve been playing the trumpet since the fifth grade and kept up with it all the way through high school and into college. I attended the University of Florida in 1971 as a music major, and I actually studied trumpet performance under the direction of Gary Langford for four years. Gary is the current director of the band and is also an Emeritus Professor of Music at the University of Florida. It’s definitely been a great experience being reunited with him.
The band was originally founded in 1974 with eleven members. Today we have about 80 members who are teachers, scientists, professors, students, electricians (of course) and other members of the community. Some of the biggest events we do include the Charles Dean Trumpet Memorial Concert, the James B. King Veterans Day Concert and Fanfare and Fireworks, which is an event held on the University of Florida campus each summer for the Fourth of July. We have even played at the Heart of Florida airshow and on Walt Disney World’s Fantasy Land Stage as their first nonprofessional adult concert band. Pretty cool, right?
I think my favorite part of being a member of the Gainesville Community Band is working hard during rehearsals and seeing the enjoyment that our performance brings to the audience on concert day. Please feel free to take a listen to some of our music here (http://www.gnvband.org).
If you can’t catch us on April 12, don’t worry! The Gainesville Community Band will also have shows on May 10 and July 3. Hope to see some of you there.
