Getting rid of a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) is not as simple as disposing of a traditional light bulb. Fluorescent light bulbs should never be thrown away in your household trashcan or in your local landfill. CFLs contain mercury, which makes them more energy efficient than traditional light bulbs. The mercury found in CFLs, while only a small amount, can be harmful and toxic to both humans and the environment. It is important, and sometimes required by law, to dispose of your fluorescent bulbs responsibly.
You can recycle your used CFLs at multiple retailers. You can drop CFLs off at the following locations:
- Ace Hardware
- Home Depot
You can also contact your local hardware store if it is not listed above to check whether they have CFL recycling programs in place.
