On Sunday, yours truly will be playing a holiday concert with the Gainesville Community Band! You can come celebrate the winter holiday season with us on Sunday, Dec. 6, 3:00 pm, at the Santa Fe College Fine Arts Hall.
This is my fourth year with the Gainesville Community Band, but my love of music began long before I joined the band. I’ve been playing the trumpet since the fifth grade and even played in college. I attended the University of Florida and studied trumpet performance under Gary Langford, the current director of the UF band and Emeritus Professor of Music at UF.
The Gainesville Community Band was originally founded in 1974 with 11 members. Today we have about 60 members who are teachers, scientists, professors, students, electricians (of course) and other members of the community. Some of our biggest performances include the Charles Dean Trumpet Memorial Concert, the James B. King Veterans Day Concert and Fanfare and Fireworks, an event held on the University of Florida campus each Fourth of July. We have even played at the Heart of Florida airshow and on Walt Disney World’s Fantasy Land Stage as their first nonprofessional adult concert band.
Every event is special because I get to see my efforts and hard work pay off with the joy our music brings to the audience. Make sure to stop by to enjoy some holiday music played by yours truly! If you can’t make it Dec. 6, no worries – the next show is Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. Hope to see some of you all there!
